LUXURY LIVING AT THE HEART OF OLD CAPE TOWN
01 Bridge Street is an elegantly restored, tastefully appointed Edwardian two-bedroomed cottage just five minutes from Cape Town and its myriad attractions.

01 Bridge Street suits single travelers, couples or friends travelling together. Its two double bedrooms offer total privacy, peace and quiet despite Bridge Street’s central location less than five minutes from the City and a mere ten from its vibrant Waterfront. It is also an ideal base from which to explore the wonders of the Cape Peninsula and the Cape Winelands – or invite friends or business associates over, cook lovingly and simply stay in and entertain. But beyond its luxurious bounds lie ranges of mountains, beaches, restaurants and wine farms - all within an easy and scenic hour’s drive.

However, should your interests tend more to street and night life, 01 Bridge Street is also within ten minutes drive of some of the best boutiques, cafés, restaurants, cinemas, theatres and clubs in the country. 01 Bridge Street is also part of the South African story: located in the characterful and eclectic enclave of Woodstock, it borders the historic District 6, whose nearby museum heralds a powerful past. And, of course, 01 Bridge Street sits right against the mountain, nestling under the imposing Devil’s Peak, which forms part of the Greater Table Mountain chain.

In contrast, equally close is Cape Town’s business district and Convention Centre (5 mins). But for now, imagine a coffee at ‘Frangipani’ on Roodebloem Road (3 mins), followed by a browse through the Greenmarket Square craft market, a stroll past the Cathedral to Cape Town’s Museum Mile, a sundowner at Hemisphere (31 floors up on Long St) and a culinary performance at The Showroom (Chiappini St), followed by jazz & a cigar at Kennedy's (Long St) - or maybe marimbas at Mama Afrika (Long St). All these experiences, and many more, are just ten minutes away.

For other days, the historic Waterfront and the Robben Island Ferry are close by. Or visit some of Cape Town’s 50 beaches (10 - 40 mins), Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens (15 mins away and a must), Cape Point (1 hr), the Winelands (45 mins) and many other options. Welcome to 01 Bridge Street, Woodstock, Cape Town and the Western Cape!

EATING IN OR OUT
01 Bridge Street is ten minutes drive from a fully-equipped shopping centre with grocery shops and a wide variety of daytime restaurants, coffee shops and bars.

If you feel like cooking, there is a Woolworths Food Market and a large Pick n Pay supermarket in the Gardens Shopping Centre, both of which also offer great ready-made food that you just warm up in the microwave. The Pick n Pay also has a bakery and wine section. In addition, there is a fine German delicatessen and a tempting patisserie, as well as – for the more virtuous – a well-stocked health store.

If you prefer to eat out, there are several restaurants in the centre and in Woodstock itself (3 mins) there are a couple of intriguing options for the more adventurous: two daytime eateries are reliable: ‘Frangipani’ and ‘Sprout’ at the Old Biscuit Mill (7 mins). At night Jamaica Me Crazy offers a young and relaxed vibe and views out over town from an upstairs deck, while impeccably décor-ed Chandani is definitely a destination restaurant for lovers of Indian food. If you venture into town, the choice is huge – consult our Fine Dining section for more information or ask us for a recommendation.

GIVE ME THE NIGHT
Cape Town at night: bars and clubs to suit all tastes are on the menu. They concentrate in two nearby areas – Long Street (5 mins) and Somerset Road (7 mins).

Class or sleaze? Jazz or hip hop? Town or township? You pays your money… You can drink in a traditional English pub or stylish seaside bar. You can hang out at Joburg (it’s a bar) or Kennedy’s (fine cigars, fine jazz), ascend to Hemisphere (31 floors up, ?R50 cover) or hit high style at the Grand Daddy’s ?M bar (metrosexual heaven) – all this on buzzing Long Street. Or you can drink merrily in a township shebeen (take a local guide: street signs are scarce). And you can dance to whatever beat grabs you – kwaito (Snap), jazz (Green Dolphin) salsa (?Cubana), hip hop and R&B(?Xxxxxxxx) or a bit of everything on the 3 dance floors of ?Xxxxxx. Then there’s model mecca, Rhodes House. Other established ‘names’ include Chrome, the Galaxy, a 25 yr-old Cape Flats institution, and Swingers – a rather younger one. Not forgetting the Somerset Rd gay ‘village’ paradise of Café Manhattan, Bronx, Beulah and the Loft, as well as the manic Gat parties. There’s always something happening, whatever your fancy!

KEEPING FIT AND HEALTHY
Sport of all sorts – aquatic, terrestrial and airborne, some quite extreme – finds a home in Cape Town. But if all you seek is a gym, there’s a well-equipped one nearby.

01 Bridge Street is a place to relax, but if you must break out in a sweat and work out, there’s an up-to-the-minute fully equipped Virgin Active gym 10 minutes drive away at Wembley Square near Gardens Centre. But beware: all manner of unhealthy temptations also lurk there - Knead’s excellent pies and pastries and Sinn’s excellent ice cream, to name but three. Of course, all manner of other sports are practiced in Cape Town – as our Discover section will tell you.

RETAIL THERAPY
Cape Town has many malls, both indoor and out, coupled with quaint shopping streets and three thriving craft markets: all within 20 minutes drive.

In Cape Town, there’s much to please the shopaholic… Apart from the Waterfront’s 470 stores, there’s Africa’s largest indoor mall, Canal Walk: 400 shops, 17 cinemas and the city’s big bad amusement park: Ratanga Junction. But fashionistas should head for Cavendish Square in fast-renewing Claremont or smaller style-spots like the Cape Quarter, which focus on street cafés and décor (and the best coffee in town at Origin on Hudson Street). But if it’s authentic African crafts you seek, then visit Greenmarket Square, Green Point Market (Sun only), the Pan-African Market in trendy Long Street or the Red Shed at the Waterfront. A new must for locals is the organic Neighbour Goods Market at the Old Biscuit Factory in Woodstock – just down the road from 01 Bridge Street but Saturdays only. And don’t forget our local Gardens Shopping Centre, complete with Woolworths foodstore, cafés, boutiques and a well-stocked Pick n Pay supermarket, just 10 minutes away. Something for everyone!

LET’S GO OUTSIDE
Cape Town has a Mediterranean climate – hot, dry summers and cooler, wetter winters. It can be windy but, if the sun’s out, you can be outside all year round.

Capetonians live outside in the summer. That means sundowners on the Atlantic seaboard or picnics on one of the fifty or so beaches around the Peninsula. Maybe try an open-air concert (at Kirstenbosch or Oude Libertas in Stellenbosch) or a moonlit show at Maynardville or Spier (1 hr). But all year round there’s a huge range of more sporting activities on offer: golf, running, rollerblading, J-boarding, cycling, climbing, riding, cricket, rugby, tennis plus the more extreme abseiling (off Table Mountain, if you wish), bungee-jumping, canoeing, sailing, diving, kite-surfing, kloofing (in Suicide Gorge: enough said…), paragliding and, of course, surfing. Just keep an eye out for Charlize the Great White… Alternatively, there are hundreds of spectacular hikes in and around Cape Town for those who want to get closer to nature on land… There’s a lot on offer so why not take a course in something you’ve always wanted to do?
